The following is my review for this, the short version (without videos), of Blogging For Smarties by Yvonne Wu who kindly sent me a free copy of this ebook.

My Review:

Blogging has become a big thing these days and if you are an author or speaker, having your own blog can help sell you, your brand and increase your following. With the help of ‘Blogging For Smarties’ you can learn all about how to blog and why, as well as some important information on how to make your blog grow.

This is a short ebook but packed with some very good information. ‘Blogging For Smarties’ has two editions this short one which I have read and a longer edition which comes with additional videos to help you. The book starts off by telling you what blogging is and why you should do it. Though the book is aimed mostly at authors and speakers I’d say right away that anyone who’s interested in expanding their online reach including those with existing blogs can learn some tips from this book.

After explaining a little about what a blog is we are introduced to wordpress ‘the most popular blogging platform’ according to this book. This is where I started to find the book useful as it goes into an explanation of the differences between and .org, something I didn’t completely understand myself until now. The book continues to explain how to set up wordpress, but with the .org site in mind as there’s more control over it, and there are some handy images amongst the text including Smarty the Speaker.

The last chapters talk about wordpress plugins, most of which I didn’t know existed, before finally suggesting how to syndicate your blog, which can help increase your readership, do podcasts and also how to make money with your blog. A lot of the information in this book is very useful, especially for me the later chapters as I didn’t even know what syndication was. It’s also helped in explaining why a self-hosted site might be a better option for the future and it’s certainly given me a lot to think about and helped me in understanding how to increase my blog’s following.

Despite how good this book is though, it isn’t very detailed. While teaching you about blogging it also expects you to know how to, or to easily learn how to navigate your way around the wordpress interface and it also expects you to know what podcasting is and some people new to blogging might want more detail in understand this. However despite my criticisms it’s still a very good book to get, particularly if you are familiar with the basics and want to really expand your following.

Overall this is a good book and worth the read. It’s well written and I love Smarty pictures and the title’s reference to the popular sweet! I haven’t seen the videos as the short edition doesn’t come with them but given that they are videos on how to set up a wordpress blog and details about installing the widgets and plugins I might be inclined to buy that book if you’re more of a beginner.
