Review: Construction by Sally Sutton & Brian Lovelock

construction

I was sent a free copy of this book by the publisher Walker Books for a review.  It’s a fun picture book I think both boys and girls will enjoy.  here is my review.

Build the frame. Build the frame. Hammer all the long. Make the stairs and floors and walls. Bing! Bang! Bong!

These words are an example of the text you get inside this book. ‘Construction’ is a fun book which will appeal to any children who are interested in or fascinated with construction or how things are made. It’s a fun book where each page is filled with rhymes similar to the one above. Every double page spread shows one part of a building which is being constructed. At first it starts with diggers, then the framework of the building, before finally putting together the walls, wiring and painting the whole thing. The last page shows the building finished and has another rhyme on the page too.

I really like a book like this, it would have appealed to me straight away when I was a child. The rhymes are very easy to say and repeat and can get in your head. The text is very large making it easy for kids to join in and read aloud too.

The book is slightly wider and shorter than A4 with colourful and very glossy pages. I really like the illustrations. There’s no mistaking what is happening in each picture. The images are very clear and yet interesting enough to seem fun for kids. There are even female construction workers which I like as I know many girls would find this book appealing too.

The very last page of the book has facts, images of different things on a construction site such as a loader crane and excavator along with information about what those machines do. There’s even an image of a construction worker and all the safety equipment they wear. I like this addition for any kids who are really keen on this subject.

I can recommend this book for anyone for a quick and fun read-aloud book. Not only is it fun but interesting too and great for both boys and girls!
