Review: Carrie Hatchett’s Christmas – Novelette of the Carrie Hatchett, Space Adventurer series by J. J. Green

This short story is part of the Carrie Hatchett Space Adventurer series – a science fiction comedy series.  It’s a stand alone story that takes place after the other books of the series though there’s nothing that will really spoil your enjoyment if you read this first.  I have already read Mission Improbable book 1 of the series.  Here’s the review for this fun novelette.

As strange aliens invade Earth at Christmastime Carrie, a Transgalactic Intercultural Community Crisis Liason Officer, and her friends must find the aliens and stop the invasion, but all isn’t quite what it seems when it comes to who or what has invaded Earth.

This is a fun short story for Christmas. I’ve read the first in the Carrie Hatchett series, Mission Improbable, and even though I haven’t read the rest yet you don’t really need to read them in order to enjoy this story. Set in London during Christmas there’s an alien invasion in the usual fun, and slightly silly, style of the series.

It’s a short story so I won’t go into too much detail but it’s written well and I enjoyed all the characters and the general story. The tale is fast paced and focuses on the action of seeking out the aliens. The story is funny and well thought out but I was able to predict the outcome of the tale sooner than it was revealed. That didn’t stop me enjoying the story though.

There isn’t anything upsetting or offensive and a variety of ages would enjoy this story. I’d say those who enjoy science fiction comedy stories especially with slightly daft or silly humour would enjoy this the most. I do think it helps to know who Carrie Hatchett and her friends are too, by reading at least the first instalment of the series.

Overall a fun tale from Christmas with a fun, and interesting twist on a certain Christmas creature.

Rating: 4.5/5

Book Description:

It’s Christmas! The alien invasion has begun.

Carrie Hatchett’s hoping for a quiet Christmas. She’s got five times as much food as she needs, and she’s made a catnip surprise and a dogfood cake for her pets.

But there’s no rest for Carrie.

An ancient race seems intent on invading Earth. As a Transgalactic Intercultural Community Crisis Liaison Officer, Carrie’s duty-bound to respond to the threat.

The aliens have been spotted at Santa’s Grotto and in a pantomime. Will Carrie find them in time and send them packing before they ruin everyone’s Christmas?

For lovers of Dr Who and other slightly strange scifi series.
